Perry Joseph - Printmaker
Artist Statement: Woodcuts are tactile in appearance and create bold compositions. I am attracted to textures and patterns, and how they are revealed by light. Since there are no gray tones in a woodcut (unless you print with grey ink), the fun is creating the illusion of transition from shadow to highlight without being able to create real tones. These images may appear to reference mythology, religion, etc. But they are really about dreams and other mysterious matters. Some of these images have stories behind them, others are sparked by something I see or hear. Some of them just tear their way out.
